The Power of “RE”

Have you noticed something about the language that everyone is using during this Covid-19 pandemic? And, by the way, these are words that you are probably using too. I’ve observed it when I watch the news and hear journalists, experts, leaders, and medical professionals speak. I’ve noticed it when I have conversations with family, friends and clients - and I hear myself saying it too.  Across the board this pattern is occurring. It’s really something that’s on everybody’s mind and actually it’s on everybody’s lips.  It is the use of words that start with the prefix “RE.”

So, what’s so special about the prefix RE?  Well, it comes from the Latin “re” and it means “to repeat, to do again, to go back and do again.”  In essence, what we are expressing is our desire to do things over again. We want to have the chance for a do-over.

My favorite “RE” word is the word “reset.”  The Great Reset, the Big Reset, the Global Reset, the Sacred Reset. Each phrase is used to describe what’s happening to us all right now. This holding pattern or waiting room that we are all in until our new post-Covid future begins. Here in this reset, similar to a phone device, we wait in stillness, anticipating nervously and maybe even excitedly for what life will be like when we usher in the new future.

While we are in this reset we are saying phrases like: “I want to refocus my energy;” “reprioritize what matters to me;” “restructure the business;” “reallocate resources;” “reevaluate my relationships;” “rethink what I’m doing with my life;” or “recommit to my health and fitness.”  All of these thoughts that are on our minds right now as a collective indicate that we want another chance. We are stating our desire and intentions to live differently. However it is that we were doing life and/or business, we want an opportunity to reassess and regroup. Right now in this moment as we look at our lives we want to act differently, we want to show up differently. We want to make changes – WE want to change.

This is brilliant! Because really - when will we ever have a chance to do that “something” (you fill in the blank here) all over again?  I’ve heard people also use words like, realign, reorganize, rebuild, reinvent, reconnect, reclaim - all of these words indicate our desire to pause during this reset and reconsider, reengage and rethink. Our language is expressing our intention to redo something and do it differently. Our language is creating a collective energy and movement towards transformation both personal and global.

During this great reset we have this opportunity to choose our intentions that matter to us - any of these concepts that matter to us- to recharge ourselves, to reignite our passions, to re-energize our projects, to rebuild relationships at work and at home. We get to choose anything and everything in this moment. This is significant, because what we choose to focus on ultimately directs how we live.

Maybe your heart is leading you to redirect and reclaim, to relearn, to recreate, to retake, to reunite, to reconstruct, to refuel, to reboot, maybe even to be reborn.  Any of these words, any of these concepts, is available for us to do again. Think about the language that you’ve been using during this time.   I’m fairly certain you’ve been using some of these “re” words as well. Which words resonate with you and are pointing to how you want to navigate through the post-Covid phase? And if you can’t think of any existing words, feel free to create your own like I did. One of my words is “re-mindful” which for me means to be mindful of being mindful.

I invite you right now during this reset to make a commitment to the actions that you want to do again, the ones for which you want to have a second chance. These intentions to which you are recommitting will prove very valuable as you move forward in these uncertain times. You see, your intentions will ground you, support you, and will be a constant reminder of how you want to live and show up in your life. You can always turn to your intentions to re-center yourself when you are feeling anxious or worried. This is the power of intention – this is the power of “RE.”
